Modernity Skirts the Hallowed

This is a fascinating dilemma. This photo symbolizes everything that Muslims fear. It is the epic depiction of western modernity as an affront.

You know, this is the sort of ridiculous commentary one expects from non-Muslims. What, you think that the building of hotels in sight of the Kaaba is some sort of "affront" by "Western modernity?" Who do you think is paying for all of this development? Muslims are, of course! Some Muslims don't like this development, but not for the reason you think. They're more concerned about the aesthetics of the landscape surrounding the Kaaba, preferring to be able to see the mountains around the city, as it was for the first 1300 years or so, rather than having hotels block the view. And if you think these few hotels are an "affront," wait until you see the full design of the development that's scheduled to be built. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks for your comment. I could have been more sensitive in my phrasing. These are the two sites that I was reading from:

I find the discussion fascinating.

From of the other discussions that I have read on ArchNet, many contributers seem to be of the opinion that some recent Islamic architecture [not just around Mecca] is an importation of Western styles and construction methods because newer projects are so business driven and lack regard for Islamic culture.

In another vein, I see these images of the Kaaba surrounded by the fruits of industrialization and I draw a symbolic parallel to how Christians in America seek to maintain authentic Biblical faith while surrounded by an industrialized world. Both religions face something similar in the 21st century [though I wouldn't take this idea too far].
